Illness hitting schools hard

AMHERST – While the number of sick students continues to climb, officials with the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board are urging calm.
Attendance figures from Tuesday show a sharp increase in the number of students out of class with illness-related absences. From just a few schools a week ago, there are 14 schools in the Chignecto family of schools with absentee rates higher than 10 per cent.
Calf put down after accident
NAPPAN - A female moose spent some time over the weekend and into Monday morning wandering around a field near Nash's Corner.
The cow was traveling with a calf on Sunday when the latter was struck by a vehicle.
The accident came through to the RCMP at 5:45 Sunday evening, said Const. Atkinson. She said the detachment received the call because there was more than $1,000 worth of damage done to the vehicle.
Supporting miner’s widows
HALIFAX - A Liberal MLA introduced legislation Monday that will retroactively restore survivor benefits to 50 widows of the mining disasters in Springhill and other industrial accidents.
Currently, those Springhill widows whose spouses died before 1985 and who subsequently remarried were stripped of their survivor benefits. A Supreme Court of Canada ruling changed the parameters in 1999, but Leo Glavine feels the 14 years worth of benefits that were lost should be returned.
